With the evolution of this blog, there seems to be a need to go over again where to find the best resources for my thoughts on various media:

1)  http://shannon-muir.com is my overall website to find out about all my writing genres.

2) Commentaries on the state of publishing (self-published and otherwise),  and connections between writer and reader will be here at this blog for the time being.

3) Thoughts and inspiration on finding your path in life in general, beyond just writing, are at the Tumblr http://www.ownyourowntale.com.

4)  Insights on animation across the board, as well as my career in general, will be at Shannon Muir’s Animated Insights.

5) Information about my genre fiction and new pulp work is at the Tumblr http://shannon-muir.net.

6) Information on my self-published series are at the following Tumblr sites: willowbrooksaga.com or spontaneouschoices.com.

7) The webcomic I co-write, FLYING GLORY AND THE HOUNDS OF GLORY,  is at http://www.flying-glory.com.

8) The craft of writing of all forms, and news on work not encompassing any area above,  can be found at my Tumblr muirwords.com.

9) News on my visual content for channels like YouTube and Vine is at the Tumblr http://www.discoverwords.com.

10) Interviews and excerpts from other authors books will appear at Infinite House of Books, since those areas are its focus. For highlights prior to 2015, visit the sister Tumblr site at http://www.infinitehouseofbooks.tumblr.com .

Thank you all for your continued support since 2000.

THE HEART’S DUTY (SECOND EDITION) EBOOK NOW PERMANENTLY 99 CENTS October 19, 2013

After much thought, I have decided to permanently drop the price on THE HEART’S DUTY (SECOND EDITION) for the ebook to 99 cents. This change has already been submitted to Smashwords and Amazon and should hit other vendors soon. This has been done for the following reasons:

– Some people already purchased the first edition, any many more received it for free during giveaways around its release
– Just slightly under half was available in first draft form on Goodreads
– The added Epilogue is also available online

Due to associated costs, the price of the print book will not change.

That said, there are plans underway to do more with this stable of characters. THE HEART’S DUTY doesn’t end here!

Get the Ebook here for 99 cents:

The Story Behind Discoverwords.com April 15, 2013

Last week, I officially launched a blog devoted to information on bargain books, free books, limited time promotional books, and other book news called Discoverwords.com. A lot of this material used to be done in the early days on Infinite House of Books, which turns a year old this month. Most of it fell away except the limited time promo books as more and more blog tours with interviews have become the mainstay of Infinite House of Books.

This year I also took a class in User Experience where we needed to create a class project of developing a website. I didn’t want to develop for a website I didn’t at least own the URL to, so I went and found something generic enough for my needs but would fit my project. After many attempts, the fit I found was Discoverwords.com. Past the project, I had no idea what I would do with the URL, but I knew it was a real good find.

With the first anniversary of Infinite House of Books coming around, I began to see what had no longer been offered on the website and the reality being that the one site really couldn’t serve two audiences. As came clear during the User Experience research, some audiences just want to know the latest sales and bargains and don’t care as much in-depth about the authors or the creative process (sorry to say). While Infinite House of Books will continue to examining the relationships between writers and readers in depth, discoverwords.com will be the quick place to find out about bargain and free books plus news gleaned from press releases.

I will plug all my own bargain books and sales at discoverwords.com, but mainly as an example of what is possible. I invite any writer interested in using discoverwords.com to go to the site and read the guidelines. I’m always happy to support writers any way I can.

Now, back to my own writing.

2015 UPDATE: The Discover Words blog experiment for isolating excerpts and sales ultimately didn’t work out, and was further hampered by a major blog crash brought about by a PHP update that lost the information. As a result, Discover Words now focuses on news related to visual social media such as YouTube and Vine. INFINITE HOUSE OF BOOKS has returned to featuring all sorts of information about books, and I encourage you to visit both sites. Some DISCOVER WORDS  posts that were rescued via Wayback Machine that were more commentary in nature have been reconstructed on this blog for reference and noted accordingly.

Ending 2012 the Write Way… December 31, 2012

In many ways I’m glad to see 2012 go. It wasn’t easy. But it brought a lot of good things as well.

Most of all, I finally expanded my work in indie self publishing and began introducing the world to the town of Willowbrook, something I’ve wanted to do ever since I started writing about it in NaNoWriMo in 2006 but many barriers got in my way to doing more with it. This year I released not one but three books in the fictional town, discovering both the location and characters from new points of view.

I also managed to fit in a visit back to Truth Knox, a new character who took me by surprise as I experimented with the paranormal in the form of psychic powers for NaNoWriMo 2011. Ironically, my work for NaNoWriMo 2012 would be what prevented me from releasing that when I planned.

As for my work, THE PHOENIX BURNS, written for NaNoWriMo 2012 – I am actually looking into some opportunities for this next generation follow up to THE PHOENIX RISES.  Once I get a better sense of my options in 2013, I’ll let you know.

I look forward to revising both Willowbrook and the world of Truth in2013, plus other new adventures along the way. Thanks so much for your support.

All the Latest Book News… December 3, 2012

1) I did make the 50,000 words to “win” National Novel Writing Month for the eighth year straight with THE PHOENIX BURNS. Things looked really tight for a while so I’ve pleased to have succeeded.

2) The second TRUTH REVEALED novel, ON THE SEARCH FOR TRUTH, finally got its long awaited release December 2nd on Amazon only as part of KDP Select. Amazon Prime members can borrow it for free, regular cost is $2.99. The first book in the series, HALF TRUTH AND FULL LYE, costs an everyday 99 cents at Amazon and other retailers.

3) Next up on the schedule is the completion and release of the third book in THE WILLOWBROOK SAGA, called FILL THE INNER CIRCLE, which I hope to complete by December 31st 2012 if not prior.

So what’s in store for 2013?

So far my only plans are to finish editing and releasing Book 4 and Book 5 of THE WILLOWBROOK SAGA (which already exist in a first draft form), as well as writing and releasing the third installment of the TRUTH REVEALED series called GETTING TO THE TRUTH. I definitely plan to make time to tackle NaNoWriMo for year 9. Other than that everything is still wait and see at this time. Keep following this blog for updates!

Sounds like a phrase I should be using for NaNoWriMo, but that is next month. No, this is actually where things stand on ON THE SEARCH FOR TRUTH, the follow up to HALF TRUTH AND FULL LYE.
I am getting close to done but the situation is similar to when I was working on DOWN TO THE ROOTS (I am still at the same job but I am done at the end of October). I’ve ended up doing more work at my day job then I thought. So while the manuscript may be done it might be in need of a slight polish.

What I did for DOWN TO THE ROOTS worked all right as far as the free first draft promotion went; however due to timing doing that as a promotion will overlap my NaNoWriMo free work in progress promotion of THE PHOENIX BURNS. I will probably do a ON THE SEARCH FOR TRUTH appearing at Smashwords only for at 99 cents  with coupon event while THE PHOENIX BURNS will be the one for free, and also plan a similar sale coupon for THE PHOENIX RISES.  This way people who want to continue the TRUTH REVEALED story can but not have to pay full price while I work on the edits.
One thing I have learned this year is that it is really hard to promise release dates in advance when you self-publish and work full time when you work in an industry that isn’t of the 9 to 5 variety. I think if you have a steady “day job” it’s a bit more doable. I really need to figure out how to approach this for 2013. It might just be that I devote myself to making the next 4 Willowbrook titles (which mainly are in need of edits as the material largely comes from past NaNoWriMos) and the next book in TRUTH REVEALED all that is on my plate for 2013.

We shall see.

On Moving Release Dates Yet Again July 23, 2012

Last night I announced on willowbrooknovels.com that DOWN TO THE ROOTS is moving to August. A lot of stuff happened this month that I know is going to prevent me getting a quality finished polished draft done by July 31st. I do have quite a bit done though.

In the meantime I have been proofing for print versions of THE HEART’S DUTY (2ND EDITION) and THE PHOENIX RISES, and as those come out on Amazon, I’ll make announcements at spontaneouschoices.com.

I just think if I rushed it would be a disservice to the readers. And readers always come first.

Hosting Blog Tours June 4, 2012

As of today, I’ve started hosting blog tours… but not at this blog. I like the concept of them, and I definitely want to to help promote other authors. However, I also want you to know that when you come to a blog that is SHANNON MUIR’s Animated Insights that it is exactly what you are getting. My solution to that was to create another site, INFINITE HOUSE OF BOOKS (http://www.house-of-books.com), that would allow for blog tours and guest posts without feeling like false advertising.

The book kicking off blog tours at INFINITE HOUSE OF BOOKS is THE ORPHAN, THE SOULCATCHER, AND THE BLACK BLIZZARD by Kimberlee Ann Bastian. Stop on over and find out more about her book, and INFINITE HOUSE OF BOOKS as a whole.

Taking a Risk When the Story Demands May 14, 2012

A writer friend of mine recently took a look at EVERYTHING CHANGES, Book 1 of THE WILLOWBROOK SAGA – I’m hoping to release Book 2, DOWN TO THE ROOTS, at the end of the month still but my schedule has had a lot of unexpected twists so follow The Willowbrook Novels site for updates – and this writer friend basically described the book as “creepy” but guessed that was the intent.

My response?

I said that was good and that meant that the book worked.

While EVERYTHING CHANGES has elements of coming of age and romance, it also is a very unsettling and at times uncomfortable examination of dysfunctional families amidst these elements. That is why I have always been most comfortable with the “family saga” label as that is what it is first and foremost. As I myself admit in the EVERYTHING CHANGES introduction, parts of this have been – and will be – very uncomfortable to write. They are not things I endorse in my real, personal life. The other challenge I’ve had is writing so to examine the issues and not to judge; I want to just paint the picture and leave it up to the reader to analyze. For me in order for writing to be effective and carry meaning, both writer and reader must participate equally (this doesn’t apply to escapist fiction, where the reader surrenders to going on the writer’s ride, and that has its place too but it isn’t what I write).

It takes a lot of bravery to let the characters “do the driving,” to quote my friend. For me though, that is part of the thrill of it, even if the ride is bumpy.
